Daudi E. S. Tingatinga (1966 - 2015)
Daudi Tingatinga was the only son of Edward S. Tingatinga, the founder of Tingatinga Art. Together with his older sister Martina he conserved the tradition of his father's style.
He was only six years old, when his father died. His mother Agatha, left alone with two small children, could not afford to send them to school. They grew up in poverty. It was only when Mzee Lumumba taught him to paint that he finally could earn his living.
Although Daudi could not learn the art of painting from his father, he stayed committed to his traditional style and plans. The classic Tingatinga leopard on orange continued to be the favourite motive customers asked for. Sometimes he chose other background colours, sometimes other animals like an antelope or a lion. The background always was one solid colour.
Another successful plan became his guinea fowl tree.
Daudi Tingatinga died on May 12, 2015. He left behind two orphans: Cecilia (15) and Saidi (12).
