Steven Mkumba

Mkumba was born in 1965, he is of Makonde origin. After seven years primary school he came to Dar es Salaam in 1990. He learned to paint in Tingatinga style, his teacher was the late Salum Mussa.

Mkumba is one of the oldest artists of the second generation and certainly one of the best. He is famous for his zebra paintings, but he can master any plan. He can also paint hospital stories with sparkling imagination. Sometimes he is asked to illustrate messages for medical campaigns like "Avoid AIDS" or "Tetanus Vaccination for pregnant women". He also likes to paint funny animal hospital scenes in a comic manner, which make visitors in exhibitions smile.
In autumn 2010 he took part in an exhibition in Fukuoka, Japan, and he was very successful there.
Mkumba is married and has three kids. He loves to read the bible - and watch TV.
